Case file: an East-China inverter maker that was 'vertically integrated'

A Middle-East EPC got a sharply priced 1500V string-inverter quote promising in-house cells and a TÜV mark. Our Spec Match said otherwise.

Key finding

A 1500V string inverter quoted 14% below market carried a TÜV mark that actually covered a discontinued 1000V/50 kW model, not the 1500V/320 kW unit on the PO. The 'cells to inverter' integration claim was also overstated: cells, IGBT modules and capacitors were all sourced from third parties.

The brief

A utility-scale EPC in the GCC had shortlisted three Chinese 1500V string-inverter suppliers for a 120 MWp solar plant. One bid landed 14% below the others, with a deck claiming “full vertical integration, cells to inverter” and a “TÜV-certified” badge on every page. They asked for a Spec Match before issuing the PO.

Spec Match verdict: RED

One core reason. The TÜV mark on the deck covered a different product family, a 1000V model discontinued two years earlier, not the 1500V unit on the quote. It had been carried over cosmetically.

What the Remote Audit turned up

We ran the Spec Match and then, at the client’s request, a Remote Audit. Three findings:

  • RED, certificate mismatch. The “TÜV-certified” claim resolved to certificate No. [REDACTED], scope line naming the 1000V/50 kW model. The 1500V/320 kW unit on the PO had no valid third-party safety certificate at the time of quote. A buyer relying on the deck would have shipped non-certified kit into a grid with strict inverter compliance.
  • YELLOW, integration claim overstated. The “cells to inverter” story was true only for the enclosure and BMS firmware. Cells, IGBT modules and the DC-link capacitor bank came from three separate vendors, none named in the contract. That’s normal in the industry, but it changes the failure-analysis and warranty story the deck implied.
  • YELLOW, thermal-management gap. The published efficiency curve held to 98.2% at 25°C ambient. The datasheet omitted the derating curve above 45°C, which is exactly the ambient the GCC site sees for five months a year. At 50°C the unit’s own internal test log (obtained from a leaked copy) showed 96.4% and a repeated over-temperature foldback event the sales team never mentioned.

Three alternatives on the same page

The red report shipped with three vetted alternatives. Two had valid 1500V certificates and named component suppliers. One was a second-tier brand the client hadn’t seen before. We confirmed in writing that we hold no financial relationship with any of them.

What happened

The client dropped the bid, re-ran the tender with certificate-scope as a pass/fail gate, and awarded to a supplier whose scope line matched the PO. Estimated exposure avoided: the cost of re-invertering a 120 MWp plant plus grid-compliance penalties. A seven-figure sum, caught by a $600 Spec Match.
